This Friday, the club from Gasteiz starts its 22nd consecutive season in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, facing Olympiacos at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.
The most prestigious competition in European basketball tips off a new season and, once again, Baskonia will compete at the highest level, as it has done ever since the competition began. The club from Gasteiz is one of the four clubs that have been present in all editions of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, along with CSKA, FC Barcelona and Olympiacos.
In this 22nd season, Baskonia will once again be competing against the great European powers of the old continent, demonstrating all its power and ability and taking that representative Baskonia Character, so typical of the club, around Europe.
On October 18, 2000 Baskonia took on Cibona Zagreb in the first Euroleague match. Since then, the team from Gasteiz has played a total of 519 games in the European elite, making it the third team with most games under its belt. CSKA Moscow is the team with the most matches in the competition with 532, followed by FC Barcelona with 531.
The club from Vitoria is the second highest scorer in the history of the tournament, with a total of 41,941 points. It is also the third most generous with 8,182 assists handed out in the history of the competition and the fourth highest rebounder (1,787).
More than two decades competing at the highest level make Baskonia a benchmark in European basketball. The club from Vitoria-Gasteiz has been present in six Final Four. The first was in 2001 against Kinder Bologna, followed by the Final Four in Moscow (2005), Prague (2006), Athens (2007), Madrid (2008) and Berlin (2016).
Baskonia starts the new season captained by one of the most successful coaches in the competition, Dusko Ivanovic. The Montenegrin coach will begin his 18th season in the competition of which 13 have been at the helm of Baskonia, with a total of 221 games guiding Baskonia.
Matt Costello and Steven Enoch are two of the seven new faces at Baskonia. The two Baskonia inside players will make their debut in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague this Friday (20:00) against one of the most historic teams in European competition, Olympiacos Piraeus, in one of the classics of the tournament.
With almost 300 wins, the club from Gasteiz is among the teams with the most victories in the history of the competition. For yet another season, Baskonia will continue to compete at the highest level around Europe’s great cities. More than 20 years in which the Basque capital has been the epicenter of great moments of basketball on the old continent, such as the Final Four played in Vitoria in 2019.
