One of the most-feared offensive teams in the modern era, Laboral Kutxa Vitoria made history yet again on Thursday when it became the first team in competition history to record 25,000 points. Playing host to Olympiacos Piraeus in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Game of the Week, team captain Fernando San Emeterio had the honor of scoring the historic basket with a short jumper two and a half minutes into the second quarter at the club’s Fernando Buesa Arena.
The club has undergone changes over the years, with a handful of different coaches, many more players and even a couple changes to the team’s name, but its attacking philosophy always remained. From reaching the Euroleague finals back in 2001 through four consecutive Final Four appearances later and until the present day, the baskets have fallen faster for Laboral Kutxa Vitoria than for any other Euroleague club. Those 25,000 points have rained through 310 games for an average of more than 80 points in each.
The team’s first basket in the Euroleague this century was scored by Fabricio Oberto, while five other players – Luis Scola, Mirza Teletovic, Tiago Splitter, Andres Nocioni and Fernando San Emeterio – have accounted for more than 30% of the total. The club’s highest-scoring players in a single game, however, were two others: Saulius Stombergas with 39 points in 2001 and Arvydas Macijuaskas with 40 in 2003.
